Walk the High Line with Patrick Cullina

October 5, 2011: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Flora Grubb Gardens: San Francisco, CA

It took more than a village to conceive, plan, design, plant and maintain this remarkable garden on an abandoned elevated railroad bed in Manhattan. Patrick has been involved with this urban regenerative project for much of its conceptual and practical life. Join us for a social hour and Patrick’s vibrant illustrated talk.

Elevating Horticulture: Dynamic Landscapes and New York City's High Line

The High Line, a New York City park established on a formerly abandoned elevated railway on Manhattan's west side, has already entertained millions of visitors with its series of compelling plantings and landscape features. In a highly visual presentation, Patrick will describe the project with a particular focus on its horticultural elements and will discuss inspirational landscapes and their implications for communities from New York to San Francisco and beyond.

pcheadshota_msr_web126x178Patrick Cullina, horticultural designer, photographer, and lecturer, served as Vice President of Horticulture and Park Operations for Friends of the High Line in New York City and as Vice President of Horticulture, Operations and Science Research at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He has also worked as consultant and adviser to a wide range of municipal, commercial, and private projects. His achievements in public horticulture has been recognized by a number of organizations, earning the Garden Club of New Jersey/National Garden Clubs Inc.’s Gold Medal in 2005 and the Garden Club of America’s Zone Horticulture Commendation in 2010.

Fermob Bistro Chair on the High Line!

highlinefermobchairs_2010_09_15gs062_web216x232Fermob USA offers classic outdoor furniture. Its historic bistro chair (and tables) adds a neighborly feel to New York’s High Line garden project (photo, left). This chair has been around a very long time and Fermob’s history with this chair is about 60 years. The classic bistro chair was developed by an architect for bistros so they could extend their eating area without paying additional taxes. The chair was originally patented in 1889 and today Fermob makes this classic folding chair in 23 colors (all available at Flora Grubb Gardens!)
