Exploring the Gardens of Wonderland:
An Illustrated Talk by a Horticulturist and a Historian

April 9, 2011: 3:00 pm
The Walt Disney Family Museum: San Francisco, CA

Follow horticulturist Bob Hornback and Disney historian Paula Sigman Lowery through the Gardens of Wonderland and learn about the Queen of Hearts and her roses and the Garden of Live Flowers. We will also discuss Walt Disney’s interest in Lewis Carroll’s book and John Tenniel’s illustrations and how the classic book was adapted into the Disney film that we all know and love.

Cosponsored by the Garden Conservancy and the Walt Disney Family Museum

Bob Hornback is a horticulturist and horticultural historian who owns Muchas Grasses, a company that specializes in consultation, plant brokerage, and design with ornamental grasses. He teaches horticulture and botany at campuses throughout the Bay Area, including Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill), Merritt College (Oakland), Santa Rosa Junior College, San Francisco Botanical Garden, College of Marin, and UC Berkeley Extension. He is a popular garden writer and lecturer who will gladly tell you about phormiums, variegated plants, gardening with deer, or a wide variety of other horticultural topics. In addition to being a recognized authority on the life and work of Luther Burbank, he has also made a special hobby of studying the works of Lewis Carroll, particularly the parts that have anything to do with plants and gardens. Bob is, of course, an active member of the Lewis Carroll Society of America, whose annual meeting will be held in San Francisco on April 16-17. Bob is also a member of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Center, the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, and the California Horticultural Society. Ththe annual meeting will be held in San Francisco on April 16-17)

And on top of all that, Bob is a delightful story teller and in his element expounding on Luther Burbank and potatoes or our sweet Alice and the gardens so wonderfully described by Lewis Carroll. We will get a little history about Charles Dodgson (whose pen name is Lewis Carroll), John Tenniel, known for his beautiful illustrations, and Alice’s real family, the Liddells.

Hope to see you there – and as Bob says (along with a famous someone else) “DON’T BE LATE!”

Paula Sigman Lowery is a Disney historian, author, and former archivist for the Walt Disney Company. She is featured on DVD and Blu-ray releases of many Disney films; and most recently helped develop the story and content of the Walt Disney Family Museum, for which she continues to serve as a consulting historian.
