Page Dickey on Some Favorite Gardens and Why
In her new book Embroidered Ground: Revisiting the Garden, Page Dickey writes, “Years of visiting gardens around America and much of Europe have shaped and colored my thoughts on what makes a garden special.” For her talk she will share with us some of the gardens that especially appeal to her because of their atmosphere, sense of design, spirit of originality, or humor, and will conclude with images of her own garden, which is a favorite merely because it is hers.
Embroidered Ground was released in February 2011. In it, Page writes about the pitfalls, challenges, successes, and pleasures of the thirty-year-long process of making Duck Hill, her garden in North Salem, New York. She talks about making a garden, and about gardening with a husband and assorted dogs, cats, and chickens. And she shares her views on what contributes to a garden's success: structure, fragrance, atmosphere, the play of light and shadow, patterns and textures, multi-seasonal plants.
Read a book review in the Los Angeles Times.
Acclaimed writer and garden designer, Page Dickey is the author of several additional books including Breaking Ground, Gardens in the Spirit of Place, and Duck Hill Journal. She has written on garden design for House & Garden, House Beautiful, and Elle Décor.
