About the Ruth Bancroft Horticultural Series
Since 2004, the Garden Conservancy and the Ruth Bancroft Garden have teamed up to create two annual horticultural seminars and garden study tours in the East Bay, on different horticultural topics. The seminars, which have used venues at the Civic Arts Education Center in Walnut Creek, the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, and the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, have attracted an enthusiastic audience of horticultural/design professionals and serious amateurs to hear a parade of distinguished speakers. Each seminar also includes a visit to the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek. Seminar themes have ranged from the influence of South Africa, Mexico, and South America on the California garden, to gardening in a dry climate and plant-driven design. One seminar featured two full days of oral history about Mrs. Bancroft and her horticultural contemporaries (eight of them, including many of the seminal horticulturists and designers in California and on the West Coast in the twentieth century). These popular and information-rich events encourage networking, bring together expert speakers with a knowledgeable audience, and provide access to magnificent private gardens. These events have been supported by East Bay Municipal Utility District, Contra Costa Water District, Pacific Horticulture magazine, and Monrovia.
