Preserving Beatrix Farrand's Gardens

July 27, 2013 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
College of the Atlantic: Bar Harbor, ME

Garland Farm, Dumbarton Oaks, Hill-Stead, Bellefield, Rockefeller Gardens, and more will be included in an all-day program devoted to the restoration and maintenance of historic gardens designed by one of America’s foremost landscape architects. Join gardeners, horticulturists, preservationists, historians, and homeowners for what will be a memorable day on the coast of Maine.

Beatrix Farrand (1872-1959) was renowned for applying her great horticultural expertise to the gardens and landscapes she designed for the cream of East Coast society. While many of her gardens have disappeared or have been altered beyond recognition, a select number have been successfully restored. This seminar brings together the experts who restored and continue to oversee these gardens.

Dumbarton Oaks and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden remain two of Farrand’s most outstanding achievements, and both require scrupulous management to maintain Farrand’s original objectives. Smaller gardens, such as Bellefield, Garland Farm, Hill-Stead, and the Farm House, required extensive research before they were brought back to life in recent years. Dumbarton Oaks Park, the great naturalistic woodland adjacent to Dumbarton Oaks, is just beginning to explore how to reinvigorate an aging, but important, landscape.

Seminar speakers and topics include:

Bill Noble, director of preservation at the Garden Conservancy, garden preservation

Paula Deitz, Dumbarton Oaks 1980 colloquium

Gail Griffin, Dumbarton Oaks today

Ann Aldrich and Rebecca Trafton, Dumbarton Oaks Park

Carole Plenty, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden

Kartherine H. Kerin, Beatrix Farrand Garden at Bellefield

Elizabeth Mills, Restoring the Farm House

Melanie Anderson Bourbeau, Restoring Hill-Stead Museum's Sunken Garden

The day includes a buffet lunch and refreshment breaks as well as an afternoon reception at Garland Farm (the headquarters of the Beatrix Farrand Society, Bar Harbor), where participants can enjoy the newly restored Terrace Garden, the grounds, library, and exhibitions.
