Memorial Event Honors Emmott and Ione Chase

June 17, 2010
On the afternoon of Sunday, May 16—the Sunday before the anniversary of Emmott’s 100th birthday—a Memorial Open Garden was held at the Chase Garden, Orting, Washington, in honor of Emmott and Ione Chase. Approximately eighty people, including garden supporters, friends, and family members, gathered for a short program including a slide show. It was the first time that visitors to the garden had access to the house and were able to appreciate, from both inside and outside, the artful integration of modernist architecture and serene, Japanese-influenced landscape.

The afternoon program was also an opportunity to mark the transition of the garden from private to public ownership. As per the wishes of the Chases, the property was left to the Garden Conservancy. We are working closing together with the newly incorporated nonprofit Chase Garden, Inc. to preserve and manage the Chase’s magnificent garden and to share it with the public.
