The Royal Oak Foundation's Heritage Award was presented to the Garden Conservancy in honor of Frank Cabot, at the Royal Oak's Timeless Design Gala at New York City’s Metropolitan Club on November 5, 2012.

The Foundation noted that “the Garden Conservancy’s mission to preserve exceptional American gardens for the education and enjoyment of the public aligns strongly with the goals of the National Trust.”

The timing of this award also honored Frank Cabot’s enduring legacy as a visionary in the fields of horticulture, garden design, and conservation in the centennial year of the death of the National Trust’s own visionary founder, Octavia Hill. Frank’s widow, Anne Cabot, and son, Colin, accepted the award on behalf of the organization, with several members of the Conservancy’s board of directors also in attendance.

The Heritage Award recognizes individuals or organizations in Britain and the United States that have substantially advanced the understanding and appreciation of our shared cultural heritage. The Heritage Award was presented along with the Royal Oak's Timeless Design award, given to Julian Fellowes, screenwriter and creator of the television series "Downton Abbey."

"Gardens are, at their

most sublime, works of

art, ephemeral,

evanescent, and

inspiring in deeply

personal ways."

- Colin Cabot, in his remarks
on accepting the Heritage Award,
